Scaling & Root Planing
Gum Disease
Gum disease begins with the buildup of bacteria and plaque along the gumline. Left untreated, this plaque can calcify, or can cause a pocket to form inside the gums which traps more food and plaque. There are two major forms of gum disease:
- Gingivitis — An inflammation of the gums, caused by plaque buildup along the gumline.
- Periodontitis — Inflammation of the tissue around teeth, which damages the supporting bone and fibers and cause teeth to become loose. If periodontitis remains untreated, it can result in the loss of teeth.
Treating Gum Disease
Gum disease is treated with Peridontal Scaling and Root Planing. Periodontal scaling and root planing are non-surgical ways to treat gum disease. Scaling is the process of removing plaque, stains, and calculus deposits from below the gumline and removing tartar from the root surface. Root scaling is the process of manually smoothing the root of the tooth and removing any remaining deposits, allowing the gum tissue to heal.
During the procedure, we use a needle-free anesthetic. This anaesthetic can provide sufficient anesthesia for most patients, so that the hygienist can perform the procedure and ensure your comfort.
